My vision began in 2000 as a doula, offering support, information, and resources to women looking for choices in birth. I envisioned confident parents, fully equipped with everything needed to make their own choices throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, leading to the most empowering outcomes. My approach is deeply rooted in partnership, physiology, and faith.
I value provision of care not only for the physical aspects of health, but also the spiritual, mental, and social health of the whole person, within the context of the family. It is important to be supported in becoming parents as it is often a vulnerable time and a time of growth. Our partnership is focused on care that promotes optimal health and wellbeing, and education so clients are prepared for birth and parenting.
I believe in cultivating a relationship of trust prenatally, so the family feels safe during labor and birth. I am dedicated to ensuring that your voice is heard and your choices respected, whether in the home birth setting or in collaboration with other medical professionals when needed. Birth tends to go better when people are surrounded by those they feel safest with, causing the hormone oxytocin to flow more naturally, leading to more satisfying labors.
Out of hospital birth is appropriate for healthy, low-risk women who desire it. My job is to vigilantly assess that we are still low-risk and in the appropriate place for the safety of mother and baby. Women’s bodies are designed to be able to give birth, and the role of the midwife is to assist the mother in that process. It is a natural process, not an illness, and usually does not need to be a sentinel medical event. Interventions can be helpful or harmful and for labor and birth to unfold optimally, with the least number of complications, the best approach is usually to intervene as little as possible. Interventions may include position changes, maneuvers, herbs, medications, and/or a hospital transfer.
The postpartum period is often neglected in the maternity care system, but is a vital time to receive quality care. Supporting mental, social, and physical health are critical components that must be present in postpartum care. As a breastfeeding educator I recognize the challenges and joy that can be a part of the breastfeeding journey. I look forward to helping you those first few weeks while you and baby establish your bond. I am on call to assist with any problems you may have or general questions as your body begins to heal after birth.
